Why Do I Need A Headshot?
A headshot is much more than just a picture of you. Often, people make the mistake of assuming an acting headshot functions the same way as a business headshot. Sometimes you’ll even see kids using their school pictures as a headshot. These cheap alternatives to custom, professional headshots are fine for children’s theaters where “everyone is a star” or getting your feet wet in those first few productions. As you develop your craft and want to audition for roles where there is more competition, more pressure, more professionalism or maybe even payment, you will need a headshot that sends the message that you take yourself seriously as an actor. A well-crafted head shot tells a casting director or producer who you are before you even walk in the room. The headshot tells them all the things that you consistently bring to your roles, regardless of the story being told. They should be able to tell if you are funny, philosophical, confident, pensive, the strong silent type or would make a great bad guy (so to speak). They should know everything about you from your headshot except the sound of your voice.
Tips For A Great Headshot…
- Wear something that looks good, but not distracting. A headshot should draw their eye to your face; not elsewhere. Avoid patterned, bold or revealing tops. Pants and shoes will not show.
- Pick an outfit that suits your personality and the kinds of roles you want to play
- Get a haircut a few days before your headshot to give everything a chance to even out
- Either shave beforehand or have facial hair that looks intentional. The I forgot to shave look is not easily retouched out.
- Get a good night’s sleep! Tired eyes are evident in headshots and early morning sessions enhance this look.
- Makeup for ladies should be subtle, yet enhancing. Too much can be distracting.
- Guys…don’t underestimate the power of a little powder dusting to take off the shine.
