May is such a great time of year for outdoor family portraits in Folsom. Things are just starting to dry out giving that quintessential “California” look. There are so many great spots in Folsom to get great family portraits, whether it’s a natural setting like the gallery below or something in a manicured park, May is the perfect time of year. So the Bride-to-Be says to me, “I want to have photos of the bridal party on the footbridge – rain or shine.” You guessed it…it rained.

Most brides schedule June weddings to all but ensure great California weather. Not Cherilyn. She bought umbrellas that matched her wedding colors and ended up hosting one of the most fun photo shoots I’ve done to date. Yeah, it rained pretty hard, but the wind and cold was no match for this fun-loving group’s warmth of laughter, friendship and a love between two great people.

Tahoe Vacation – 2010

Each year, my family rents a small cabin on the east shore of Lake Tahoe for a week’s getaway. The lake surface is at 6,200 feet elevation and is 1,600 feet at the deepest point. Lake Tahoe is a stunning sapphire blue, but around the shore is a clear, bright green like you’d see in the Florida Keys. The difference is, the water is very cold. Tahoe is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide.

While I was there this year, I received an email inquiry from a potential client asking me if I had any black and white images of Lake Tahoe they could use for fine art in their office. Here’s a few I made this time. Maybe they’ll like them.

Perfect Evening Light

I love being a photographer in California! Between April and October, we have the perfect weather for outdoor family portraits. Sure, there’s a few days of rain here and there and a few hot evenings in the summer, but you can’t beat that perfect evening light so many days each year. Here’s a few photos of the Rader Family. We had such a great time and took a ton of photos.

The Hearther Family – Christmas Cards

Every year just after Thanksgiving, the onslaught of Christmas cards arrives. Inevitably, there are tons of cards that arrive with family photos. You know the ones…printed at Costco or Walgreens. Most of the time, the photo on the card is apparently an after-thought. After all, everyone’s pretty busy, so one of two things happen. Either everyone gets dressed up to take a quick photo in front of the fireplace or Mom digs through the photos from the family vacation to find something that “will do”. Send it over the internet to your printer of choice and within a couple hours, they’re ready to be picked up, addressed and mailed to everyone in the address book who will likely put it in the basket of other cards they received.

There’s another option. A professionally made family portrait usually stands out from the masses. It gets hung on the refrigerator or placed in a more prominent location on the mantel. Here’s a photo made for the Hearther family who happens to be good friends. Many comments were made when their card showed up in the mail. Phone calls and emails poured in saying how terrific their card looked. I know it’s a year away, but this next Christmas, try a professionally made portrait. Sometimes Park Pictures Work Out Best

I had been so pleased by the way Toby’s picture worked out, I decided to try for something with more action. At the Castle Park, they have several huge tractor tires half buried for kids to jump and climb on. I asked Grady to jump from one tire to the other. While I took a bunch of photos. After about 15 jumps, he was wiped out, but I had gotten the photo I really wanted…something that looked like an advertisement for shoes or a clothing company. I had in my head at the time that I really wanted to grunge it up to look more like a commercial photo than a portrait. Here’s the resulting final image. TIP: I have a professional digital SLR which takes photos at upwards of 10 frames per second. If you have a point and shoot camera, it’s a lot more difficult to time it. To do it, pre-focus by holding down the shutter button half way and hold, then press the rest of the way to get your photo at just the right moment. If you let go of the button, it has to re-focus and meter. It takes a few tries, but I’m sure you can get the hang of it pretty quick.
